What to check in a large-print word search

Before choosing a puzzle book for yourself or as a gift, look beyond the words “large print.”

Check every part you need to read

Inspect the grid letters, word list, instructions and solutions. Large letters in the grid are less helpful if the word list or answer key is much smaller. A phone preview cannot reliably show physical print size; check any stated type sizes and use a full-page sample when available.

Read the search directions

Forward-only searches are different from puzzles that hide words backward or diagonally. Choose the challenge the reader enjoys. Porch to Meadow uses rightward and downward words, with twelve words in each puzzle. That is a specific design choice, not a promise that every reader will find every puzzle easy.

Look at the answers

Full-size solutions can be easier to compare with the original grid than several tiny answers crowded onto a page. Check whether an answer identifies the complete word path.

Choose familiar themes

Gardens, food, seasons and everyday places can make a pleasant gift when they match the reader's interests. Avoid assuming that a reader's age tells you what difficulty they want. A short conversation about preferences is more useful.
